How to Write an Article for Cambridge IGCSE

Writing an article for Cambridge IGCSE English requires creativity, proper structure, and attention to language accuracy. Below are key steps to follow:

1. Understand the Task

The article question typically asks you to write for a specific audience and purpose, such as informing, persuading, or entertaining. Carefully read the question to identify:

  • Audience: Who is the article for? (e.g., teenagers, teachers, the public)
  • Purpose: What is the aim? (e.g., to inform, persuade, or entertain)
  • Content: Key points to include, often outlined in the task.

2. Structure Your Article

An article should have a clear structure with a beginning, middle, and end:

a) Title

  • The title should grab attention and give an idea of the article’s subject.
  • Use engaging or intriguing phrases, e.g., “The Secret to Success in Exams.”

b) Introduction

  • Start with an attention-grabbing sentence, such as a question, quote, or surprising fact.
  • Clearly introduce the topic and explain why it is relevant or interesting.

c) Body Paragraphs

  • Develop your points clearly: Each paragraph should focus on one main idea.
  • Use examples, facts, or anecdotes to support your points.
  • Consider your audience and tone: Are you writing formally or informally? Should the language be persuasive or descriptive?

d) Conclusion

  • Summarize the key points.
  • End with a memorable closing statement, such as a call to action or thought-provoking question.

3. Use Engaging Language

  • Varied Sentence Structures: Avoid monotony by mixing short and long sentences.
  • Rhetorical Devices: Use devices like rhetorical questions, alliteration, or repetition to engage readers.
  • Tone and Register: Match your tone to the purpose and audience. For example:
    • Formal tone: “This issue is of paramount importance…”
    • Informal tone: “Have you ever wondered why…?”

4. Meet the Word Limit

Cambridge IGCSE questions often specify a word limit. Stick to this range (e.g., 150–200 words) while ensuring your content is comprehensive and concise.

5. Review Your Work

Before submitting, check for:

  • Spelling and Grammar: Avoid common mistakes.
  • Clarity: Make sure your ideas flow logically.
  • Adherence to the Task: Ensure you’ve addressed the audience and purpose.
