To Begin, Begin…

Often battled by teachers, starting a session after another one or after break times, is an area that educators are always on a hunt for a match of strategies in their class. This article aims to provide a few based on my experiences.

Action Jackson:

Try offbeat actions like, standing on the chair or having simple dance moves to grab students attention. Once they are with you mentally, you are good to start.

Actions like clap and snap work best with young learners. Trying various actions will, within seconds, bring them to class, being attentive.

The Smiley Effect:

Drawing a smiley face and recording names of learners ready for session is the best strategy to get them to task immediately.

Rhyme Time:

Having two liner rhymes like teacher saying – ‘one, two’ and students responding – ‘eyes on you’ until you actually have their eyes on you is another one to add.

The Body Language:

Using firm body language also helps set expectations. Eg. Teacher standing in front and just observing each of the students gives a cue that they are expected to settle and get on to learning.

I am sure you too must be having a few that you glue to. Let’s hear about them in the comments.

Or

Simply share which one out of the above are you already using or would like to begin as early as tomorrow.
